After Dodge decided to separate Ram from its lineup back in 2011, former nameplate became a manufacturer instead. This year it offered V6 diesel engine for the first time, and fuel economy ratings jumped straight away. 2015 Dodge Diesel 1500 brings a mild refresh, but the powertrains will remain.
Under the Hood
As already mentioned, new to the lineup powertrain, 3.0L turbodiesel V6 engine which delivers 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque can be had across the lineup which spans over no less than 10 trim levels, from base Tradesman, over Express, SLT, Lone Star, Big Horn, Outdoorsman and Sport, to the triplet of Laramie trims: base, Longhorn and Limited. As for the gearbox, ecodiesel is mated to an 8-speed automatic, while all models are offered either as a 2WD or 4WD. Additional choices can be made in cabin and bed length, as Ram 1500 offers a choice between Regular, Quad and Crew cabs, and 5’7″, 6’4″ and 8′ box.
Design – Interior and Exterior
Even though Ram is scheduled for a facelift, changes made in 2013 were already extensive and 2015 year model’s changes won’t be as dramatic. You can expect new headlights and a few changes in heavy chrome grille, but beside that and different wheels, most parts will remain intact.
Interior will also go through a mild redesign and changes will come in color options and different accents. Depending on a trim level, Ram will still offer great number of available surfaces, from cloth to premium leather, and from metallic, to wood grain accents. In the middle of its heavy angular dashboard, sits sturdy chrome-bound instrument panel which grows into center stack with plenty of room for trinkets thanks to the fact that Ram doesn’t have a conventional, but rotary shifter. There’s a choice between 5 or 8.4-inch touch screen with six or nine standard speakers. If that doesn’t cut it for you, there’s a 506-Watt Alpine premium sound system with seven speakers.
The usual airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, hill-start assist and trailer-sway control are standard on all Ram 1500 pickups. Rearview camera can be had with all models, either as part of a standard or optional equipment, while advanced features like rear and front parking sensors depend on a trim level and cab configuration.
2015 Dodge Diesel 1500 Price and Fuel Economy
Fuel economy ratings are best in lineup with the new ecodiesel engine and stand at 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. This engine also costs $3,000 more than available HEMI V8’s, so price range starts offset for that amount from $25,000 which is the cost of a base Tradesman model with base engine. For a top Laramie Limited model, expect to pay more than $50,000, however.
2015 Ram 1500 is the first full-size pickup that decided to offer diesel powertrain on American soil. Fuel economy with it is much better, even though towing rates don’t go over 11,000 pounds.
