Audi Company launched a new hybrid car on the market, this time the new 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron brings some updates and changes. The A3 is a great family car and in the recent years, Audi updated it with the latest technologies and with much better materials than the first generations of the car meaning it is now closer to an A4 rather than the Golf which is perfectly fine for us.
The 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is the hybrid version of the car which has been available for sale in one form or another for around a year now. The car has already been launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show as an update of the original e-tron and it should be ready for sale until the start of 2016.
New Design – Updates and Changes
The exterior of the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron has been updated with the latest design language from Audi but this update is expected to last only around a year. This is because the all new A3 is under development and it should be ready for release quite soon. In the front, the Sportback received the usual e-tron grille and bumper while the wheels have been changed to the 18-spoke design of the original car.
The body-kit as well as the headlights and tail lights remained pretty much identical to the usual Sportback model which is a bit of a shame. The good part is that there are a couple of new color options from which the buyers can choose from.
Inside the cabin, the new A3 Sportback e-tron comes with pretty much all you could think of from a family car. There is climate control, a great infotainment system which is now supposed to support Android Auto, meaning it will be able to offer satellite navigation, internet access and even music streaming services via an Android phone, and even power seats in the front, all as standard. Options include satellite navigation, leather upholstery and a massive sunroof.
Specs & Performance
Engine wise, the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron comes equipped with a 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 which is then coupled with a small electric motor. The petrol engine can provide all by itself up to 150 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque while the electric motor is a small unit of 101 horsepower which is then integrated into the 6 speed dual-clutch transmission. This boosts the output of the engine to 201 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque which is quite impressive. The total advertised electric range is 31 miles and the car should get to 0 to 60 MPH in just 7.6 seconds.
However, the real World range is actually lower than that mostly because the all electric operation is not really possible all the time. On top of that, the car is nearly 750 pounds heavier than the usual A3 and 600 pounds heavier than the Sportback version, so when the battery pack has no juice left in it, the actual fuel consumption figures are a lot worse than those of the similar 1.4 liter petrol engined car or those of the 2 liter diesel model.
|Engine||1.4-liter TFSI FWD PHEV|
|Transmission||Six-speed S tronic|
2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Price
The price of the car has been bumped up slightly because the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron model is now available only on the Sportback version which is slightly larger than the usual A3. The price should start at right around $40,000 which is certainly quite a bit more than most of its competitors but Audi says that for this price the customer will get a fully equipped car which would make it quite a good deal over some of its competing models.
|Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium||$37.900|
|Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium Plus||$42.000|
|Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Prestige||$46.800|
Unfortunately though, the platform as well as the engine remained unchanged from the previous A3 e-tron which is a bit of a shame because even though that car was incredibly good on paper, in the real World it was a bit disappointing mostly because of its engine which is not as fuel efficient as you would think.
The biggest competitors are Chevrolet Volt and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive.
