New convertible has been presented at Detroit Auto Show. Buick has a lot of cars in its inventory but they didn’t really have a convertible so far. The 2016 Buick Cascada is actually a convertible based on the European Insignia, or the Buick Verano.
The Cascada shares most of its running gear with the Verano but its wheel base is slightly longer in order to make for a better convertible. Unlike other Buick models, the Cascada is made in Poland meaning that the base price is a bit higher than that of the Verano. The car will also get a few styling changes as well as interior changes over the car is is based on in order to make for a more complete experience.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the car will come with a single engine choice in the US which is a bit of a shame considering all the other countries it is sold in will get at least 3 choices. The US model will come with the 1.6 liter turbocharged SIDI inline 4 which is good for 200 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque. It will also feature an over-boost function which should increase for a short amount of time the torque of the engine to 220 lb-ft of torque.
Just like the car it is based on, the 2016 Buick Cascada will use a 6 speed manual gearbox and front wheel drive as standard with the possibility of getting a 6 speed automatic which would add to the cost of the car around 1500 dollars.
|Engine||1.6L turbo I-4 DOHC with direct injection|
|Horsepower (hp / kW)||200 / 149|
|Torque (lb-ft / Nm)||206 / 280 (221 / 300 with overboost) – estimated|
Shortly after its official launch, a new engine might also be introduced. This might come as early as 2017 and it will be a 2 liter BiTurbo diesel unit. This small engine will provide 200 horsepower and more than 320 lb-ft of torque which should make things quite interesting for the driver. Unlike the petrol engine though, it will only be available with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
In terms of fuel economy, both of them should achieve 25 MPG on average and both of them should get the car to 60 MPH in less tha 7 seconds which is right about the average of its class.
Styling – Inside and Outside look
Cascada is a typical Buick On the interior, the Cascada will feature a lot of luxury for a car in this class. The base model will come with cloth upholstery but with a leather wrapped steering wheel, satellite navigation, a multiple speaker audio system, Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as electric seats. The soft top on the other hand is going to be electric and it will retract or mount in as low as 17 seconds and up to speeds of 31 MPH which should make things quite convenient in case it rains.
|Wheelbase (in / mm):||106.1 / 2695|
|Overall length (in / mm):||184.9 / 4696|
|Overall height (in / mm):||56.8 / 1443|
|Overall width (in / mm):||72.4 / 1839|
|Track (in / mm):||62.5 / 1587 (front and rear)|
The outside of the 2016 Buick Cascada on the other hand is going to have the same lines and design notes as the other models in Buick’s range. Also, even though the car is loosely based on the Verano there are no shared panels between the two, so even though it is similar to the Verano, the Cascada looks a bit more sportier and more aggressive than it which is fine considering it is meant for a completely different market.
2016 Buick Cascada Price
From what we noticed so far, it seems that Buick chose this path in order to give the US market a more refined car than the competition and the Cascada sticks to this philosophy, being able to compete with ease with cars such as the BMW 2 Series convertible or others in their class.
The base price on the other hand is likely to be higher than 28.000 dollars which would make it one of the more expensive cars in its class but then again, it will also offer a lot more.
New BMW 4 convertible ($48,750 ) and Audi A5 convertible ($47,600) are the main competitors.
