New luxury sedan coming, 2016 Lincoln Continental. The last model of the Continental has been made all the way back in 2002, so for almost 14 years Lincoln never really had a competitor on the luxury car market. The first official photos and details are presented, yesterday.
However, they released a concept car back in 2002 which they planned to make but it never really made it into production due to the fact Lincoln and Ford never really see profit in the luxury car market anymore. However, it is time to be happy because there are new rumors around the news after a very well known musician said that he is cooperating with Ford in order to get his latest audio system in their brand new Continental.
2016 Lincoln Continental Engine range
Engine wise there isn’t really any real information about it just yet but the 2016 Lincoln Continental will most likely get a 2.7 liter twin-turbocharged V6 as the base unit. This will provide at least 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough to give the car a 0 to 60 time of less than 6 seconds and a limited top speed of 140 or 155 MPH.
This engine will easily provide 25 MPG on average which is right in the middle of its class. A bigger and more powerful unit might also arrive at a later date. This would be a twin-turbocharged 3.5 liter V6 which would make more than 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, putting it in class with the M5 and the more expensive European competitors.
A hybrid is possible but unlikely mainly because the car is aimed at the luxury performance car market and Ford doesn’t really have any real hybrid powertrains fit for the Continental. They might develop one to release at a future date, but we don’t know for sure just yet.
Both the petrol engines are going to come with a new 8 speed automatic gearbox and most likely rear wheel drive. All wheel drive is also going to be available, but only on select models.
Styling – Inside and Outside
When we talk about design, there are some changes, inside and outside. On the interior, the 2016 Lincoln Continental will be quite a bit more luxurious than the car it is based one. Standard equipment will likely include leather upholstery, triple zone automatic climate control, satellite navigation, electric seats all around the car and even a premium surround sound system.
As far as the exterior goes though, the car might borrow heavily from the original concept which was released back in 2002. Unlike that car though it will not get the suicide doors which is a shame because it would have made quite an impression on the market. The general design is expected to be quite a bit boxier than that of the current Lincoln cars but not as boxy as that of the concept. This should make from the Continental a real exquisite car that will look well above the average of its class.
2016 Lincoln Continental Release date and Price
The car is not going to be based on the older concept but rather on a new platform Ford is also going to use with the new Taurus, meaning it will actually be a stretched version of the Fusion, but with a lot more luxury tweaks than it. An official release date hasn’t been made available just yet but considering the new model of the Taurus is going to launch in 2016, the new 2016 Lincoln Continental Concept is likely going to be launched in the same time frame.
Unlike the Taurus though, the Lincoln car is going to be at least 20% more expensive, meaning a base price of around 45.000 dollars should make a lot of sense. The top of the range model might go as far as 60.000 dollars but it will easily compete with cars such as the BMW 5 Series or even the Mercedes E Class. But, the main competitors are new Cadillac CT6, Audi A8 and new Mercedes-Maybach S Class.
