Last month, BMW presented the first spy photos of the new crossover, 2017 BMW X3 M. BMW X3 represents the most affordable way of getting yourself a Bavarian-made crossover; if you exclude subcompact X1, that is.
Its current lineup is well-diverse as it is, but another iteration is getting prepared to enter the fray. 2017 BMW X3 M will get the sport package which is supposed to raise compact crossovers’ performance to new heights.
2017 BMW X3 M Engine & Specs
Conventional lineup consists of no less than three engines, and M moniker carries with itself a lot of responsibility, hence fourth option shouldn’t come as a surprise. 2017 BMW X3 M will be powered by the same 3.0L turbocharged flat-six engine which delivers 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque in both M3 coupe and M4 sedan. Needless to say, figures will be similar in X3 as well, and this means that the compact will be able to reach 62 mph in around 5 seconds.
Top speed, on the other hand, should be electronically limited to 155 mph, but then again, that’s more than plenty for a compact crossover. All-wheel drive remains the only choice, and transmission should remain 8-speed automatic as well.
Design – changes and improvements
At that point, we could easily expect X3 to shift generations. Third generation models might just be the first with sport M package, but their design shouldn’t be that different than one of the current models. With that in mind, new X3 should get slightly changed body, but all trademark features will remain where they’re supposed to. Larger air intakes, more pronounced fenders, different side skirts and two sets of dual exhaust pipes around the back are what M package usually brings and 2017 BMW X3 M shouldn’t be any different.
We already have a picture about X3 M’s future interior and it paints plenty of leather and sporty details. Seats and steering wheel will be different, naturally, and most of the car will be covered in all types of leather. Moreover, aluminum accents are supposed to serve as contrasting adornments. Feature list will be either slightly richer than in current top grades, or similar to them.
This means that M version of BMW’s second smallest crossover will offer plenty of advanced tech options with all connectivity features currently imaginable. Furthermore, the car will benefit from plenty of advanced safety systems including a rearview camera, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors and lane-departure warning.
2017 BMW X3 M Price
This version of X3 is supposed to consume most fuel. Lowest figures currently come from 3.0L unit which is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, and we can only expect 2017 BMW X3 M to come short even compared to them. When the time comes, don’t expect the car to cost less than $55,000 or more.
The key rivals are Audi RS Q5 and Mercedes AM GLC63.
2017 BMW X3 M is supposed to further improve the lineup of German compact crossover. M package always delivers superb performance and we certainly won’t start doubting the name now. This car will represent the combination of luxurious city SUV and great highway performer and, thus, a fine option for those that require best from both worlds.
