The new 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is a third generation of mid-size crossover. The first spy photos have been caught in Michigan. The current generation of the Equinox has been released back in 2009 and it received a rather big update last year. Despite that, GM is actually planning an all new 2017 Chevrolet Equinox which has already been spied testing in almost finished form. The car will be based on their highly modular D2XX platform, so it will be lighter, more rigid as well as safer than the current generation.
The new platform will also allow GM to develop a better car that will offer more space inside the cabin thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase and it should be a lot better to drive on the road as well.
What’s new for 2017?
In terms of size, the new model is expected to be slightly larger than the current generation in terms of width and length but it will be lower as well. This will make it a bit more aerodynamic and together with the improvements GM will do under the hood, the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox will be at least 10% more fuel efficient than the current generation.
2017 Chevrolet Equinox Engine range
Engine wise, the base model will finally ditch the current 2.4 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine in the favor of GM’s newest 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine. This will not only be quite a bit more fuel efficient, but it will also be more powerful. The US version is still under wraps but in Europe the engine makes up to 200 horsepower and more than 210 lb-ft of torque with ease. The top of the range model on the other hand will likely stick with its V6 which is a rare sight in this class. This will be more capable than before even though it will still be a 3.6 liter unit.
Unlike the current model, the new generation will get direct injection, variable valve timings as well as a cylinder deactivation feature. All of these should make it around 5 to 10% more efficient, all while boosting its output to around 310 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The Equinox is also expected to be one of their first cars to get an all new 9 speed automatic which has been in development for some time now.
Redesign – Interior & Exterior
The design of the car is still a well guarded secret but just as we said, the dimensions will change. Also, considering that it will be a new car, we expect it to get GM’s latest design scheme which also debuted on the new Malibu. This means slimmer headlights, an all new grille design as well as a cleaner general look. In the back we may get rectangular exhausts as well as LED tail lights while the front will get a more aggressive look than before.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is still going to offer five seats in the standard configuration but a seven seats version is a real possibility now. Also, the car is expected to come with a better sorted interior that will have smaller gaps, nicer materials as well as more equipment in the base trim levels. This time around, a 4G LTE connectivity system as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot are likely going to be standard features.
2017 Chevrolet Equinox Price and Release date
The official release date is still unknown at this point but considering that the spied model looked pretty much finished then it is safe to assume that the new car should be ready for the 2017 Detroit Auto Show and it should be ready for the market shortly after that.
It price will most definitely stay the same as before which means that a base model will start at less than $23,000 while a top end version could hit with ease more than $35,000.
The biggest rivals are Honda CRV, Ford Escape and Toyota Rav4.
