The Fiat 500X has been launched not too long ago and it is currently available around the World in very similar trim levels. Up to this point though, the car has been missing a high performance version which is a bit of a problem, especially now when most of its competitors are offering one form or another of a higher powered version.
In order to be able to compete with these cars, Fiat will likely release a higher performance version of the 500X. This will use the Abarth name and it will be quite a bit more powerful than the current versions.
New Design – changes & updates
In terms of design, the 2017 Fiat 500X Abarth will definitely follow the usual recipe of the Abarth cars. This means that it will receive a more aggressive body kit which will include front and rear bumpers, new side-skirts, larger 18 or 19 inch rims wrapped in high performance tires and even bigger brakes.
The car will also sit lower to the ground which defeats the purpose of a crossover but considering how expensive, powerful and premium it will be, it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever want to take it in off-road. A unique paint-scheme as well as a lot of customization options are also expected to be offered with the new Abarth.
|Length||4.250 MM (167.32 Inches)|
|Width||1.800 MM (70.86 Inches)|
|Height||1.600 MM (62.99 Inches)|
Inside the cabin, the car will be nearly identical to its lesser siblings. The difference will come with its seats which are not the best on the 500X. We are almost certain that the Abarth version will receive a new set of Recaro seats, a different sportier steering wheel, more premium leather upholstery as well as nicer finishing touches and a better equipment level in the base trim level.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the usual 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 or even the US 2.4 liter Tigershark inline 4 engines are not going to be offered. Instead, the 2017 Fiat 500X Abarth is going to use the same engine found in the 4C super-car, a 1.75 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which should offer over 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque, especially since the 2.4 liter petrol engine offers around 180 horsepower. While this doesn’t seem like all that much, it should be more than enough to allow the car to hit 60 MPH in less than 7 seconds and get up to a maximum top speed of around 130 MPH.
The biggest drawback we see with this choice is that Fiat will likely choose not to offer the 500X with an all wheel drive system in order to save as much weight as possible. While this makes sense for a high performance sports car, it doesn’t really make sense for a four-door performance crossover.
However, if they will ever decide to offer the car with the four wheel drive system, it will likely be offered with a differently tuned engine in order to offer less torque so it will not strain the all wheel drive system. The only gearbox of choice will likely be Chrysler’s 9 speed automatic unit which is both smooth and fast.
2017 Fiat 500X Abarth Price
Unfortunately though, there are some problems with the 2017 Fiat 500X Abarth, the biggest of these being its price. Some rumors suggest that the car will be offered at a higher price than $31,000 which would put it in the same price point with the Mercedes GLA250 or even a future Audi Q3.
Even though this doesn’t seem to be a problem, the two are much more premium cars which offers all the perks of the 500X and a few extras. We do hope that when it will be released, the Abarth will be priced a bit lower than that in order to make sense and to be successful.
