The current model of the Super Duty series has been launched back in 2010 and since then it only received minor updates inside and out. However, this time Ford is going to go a little further and they are going to release an all new set of trucks with the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty which is not going to have anything in common with the current models besides a few internal components.
Firstly, the platform of the next generation F-250, 350 and 450 is finally going to change to a more efficient one which will weigh less and it will be more durable.
On top of that, this is going to be the second truck on the market to receive the all aluminum body of the F-150 which will surely put Ford on top of its class once again.
2017 Ford Super Duty Redesign – Changes
Let’s start with the exterior of the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty because we are positive that Ford will manage to impress us with this next generation truck. Even though they did not release any kind of information about what it may look like, a truck has been photographed without any camouflage on it and the end result is a lot more impressive that we first thought.
The cabin has been completely carried over from the smaller F-150 in order to save manufacturing and maintenance costs which is a bold move by Ford. On top of that, the front end now features a larger chromed grille which is more similar to that of the F-150 than that of the older model while the back received massive Ford lettering on the tailgate.
Inside the cabin on the other hand, the truck will receive a lot of technology in order to allow it to compete with the Silverado or the Ram 2500. Even the base model of this new Super Duty series is going to get as standard air conditioning, electric mirrors and windows as well as an automatic trailer brake. Options will include everything from climate control and satellite navigation all the way up to a surround camera system with an automatic trailer steering system which will certainly be very useful.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, there are going to be some changes made to the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty which are meant to make it more refined as well as more efficient. The base 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 from the current model has been rumored to be discontinued for quite some time. In its place, Ford might get two new engines for the truck, a naturally aspirated 5 liter V8 with 385 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft of torque as well as a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 which could be similar to that in the Rator. This means it could make as much as 400 horsepower and more than 500 lb-ft of torque. In any case, Ford’s 10 speed automatic gearbox is expected to be installed.
The current 6.7 liter turbocharged V8 diesel on the other hand is expected to be carried over pretty much unchanged. This engine will continue to make 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque but this time its 6 speed automatic gearbox might be replaced with the new 10 speed unit from the Raptor. Rear wheel drive will be standard on all trucks while four wheel drive is only going to be available as an option.
2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty Price and Release date
The release date is unfortunately unknown at this point but it may arrive in showrooms by the end of 2016. The base price will likely stay similar or it may go down by a small margin to around $30,000 which would be very impressive considering all the engineering Ford is putting into this truck. The top of the range models as well as the luxury ones on the other hand will likely go past $70,000 quite easily.
The key competition: 2015 GMC Sierra HD, 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2015 Ram Heavy Duty.
