2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept

New concept vehicle had a premiere, new 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz. Hyundai is one of the few car companies out there who doesn’t offer a pickup truck in their lineup. Unfortunately, there are no exactly details about price.

However, this might change in the upcoming years with the announcement of a concept, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz, a truck which is like no other in the current market. It has been officially unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, back in January 2015, so it is quite new. While it does look like a pickup, it is more of a car than anything else.

It will use a very similar chassis to one of their car based SUVs, the Santa Fe, meaning that it won’t be offered as a ladder of frame truck. This would put it in a class of its own which was previously inhabited by the Ridgeline, a very similar car in terms of construction.

While you might think that this Santa Cruz would be aimed at people who usually drive truck then you would be wrong. The Hyundai spokesman said that it is aimed at people who never drove a truck but are in need of a car which is not only comfortable on road and can handle itself off-road, but that can also carry a decent amount of cargo in the back without worrying that it won’t fit.

Exterior details

The exterior of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz is going to be quite unique. While the early concept shows a truck which does borrow from the other cars in the Hyundai range such as the Genesis or even the Santa Fe, there are a few unique features to it. The rear has a medium sized cargo area which is accessible through a motorized tailgate while the doors are said to be suicide, meaning that the rear doors will open towards the back in order to improve the access to the rear seats as well as make it as good looking as it can be. The concept has 21 inch alloy wheels but the actual production model is said to feature 18 inch wheels with the possibility of upgrading to 19 inch wheels on the higher end version.

On the interior the concept is quite minimalistic but the base car is expected to be quite refined and equipped. Some people even say that the model will borrow heavily from the Santa Fe, meaning that it is expected to get the same dashboard as well as the same seating arrangement which would be perfectly fine considering that is quite a good car.

Under the Hood

We don’t know right now what type of engines the 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz is going to feature but it has been confirmed that it is going to be a front wheel drive truck in its base trim. This would mean that the most obvious choice for the base engine would be the current 2.4 liter inline 4 which is good for around 190 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

A 2 liter turbocharged version should also be available with 270 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque as well as a 6 speed automatic and all wheel drive. As an added bonus Hyundai also confirmed that it will be one of the few compact truck which is going to get a diesel. This is most likely going to be the 2.2 liter European version with 200 horsepower which is more than enough for such a small truck.

The actual production model of this new CUV type of car is said to launch sometime in 2017, most likely at the end of the year. The base price is currently unknown but considering there are not many cars like it, we might see it go for around 25.000 dollars for the base model and as much as 40.000 dollars for the performance version.
