The AMG GT is a very impressive car for the price and while it doesn’t feature the glorious “gullwing” doors of its predecessor, the car features a lot of upgrades over the larger and much more expensive SLS which not only make it faster, but also more efficient and more practical. So far, there are two models available on the market, the base AMG GT and the GT S which comes with slightly more power and a few interior and chassis upgrades.
While it still is a great car, it is no match for some of its competitors and in order to change that, a new model will be released in the next few months with the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT-R.
While the name might be a problem considering Nissan already has a GT-R on the market, the upcoming AMG GT-R will definitely be an impressive car. It will feature more power and torque than the other two as well as a lot of upgrades throughout in order to make it faster and better to drive. In fact, an AMG official said that the car will be around 10 seconds faster around the Nurburgring than the GT S which would be a major improvement considering it will basically be the same car.
What’s new for 2017 model year?
Let’s start our preview of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT-R with the upgrades they are going to make to its chassis. Here, in order to save as much weight as possible and offer the driver more control, the car is likely going to feature forged aluminum suspension parts and even carbon fiber inserts, all great for reducing its unsprung weight.
On top of that, it is likely that the car will feature large carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, an adjustable suspension system and larger lightweight wheels wrapped in stickier tires.
Design – short review
The design will not change all that much but the car will feature a lot of additions over the current base model. The GT-R will feature a new bumper with a large, adjustable carbon fiber splitter, an active rear wing and a large diffuser. The exhaust will likely be made out of titanium in order to save weight while some panels of the body could be swapped for the lighter carbon fiber elements, but this has not been confirmed just yet.
Inside the cabin, the car should feature all the usual commodities of a high performance sports car but instead of offering the heavy electric seats, this time around the car will most likely get fixed Recaro racing seats with racing harnesses.
Upgraded performance & Specs
Engine wise, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT-R is still going to have its engine mounted in the front of the driver, in the middle of the chassis. This is expected to remain the same 4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 also found on the GT or GT-S.
However, thanks to the car’s titanium exhaust which will allow the turbos to breathe with ease and also thanks to a re-tuned engine management system and likely a larger cooling system in order to allow the car to be used to its maximum in a safer manner, the new GT-R could offer as much as 550 horsepower and more than 525 lb-ft of torque which may not seem like much but together with the weight loss of the car and with the updated 7 speed-dual clutch automatic, it now should be able to get to 60 MPH in less than 3 seconds and get up to a similar top speed of the GT-S.
This is because the car will feature a lot of downforce which will limit its top speed but it will allow it to take corners faster than its siblings.
2017 Mercedes-AMG GT-R Price
The price is still unknown at this point but considering how much the other two cost, the GT-R could be getting over $150,000 with ease.
