The upcoming 2017 Scion FR-S will be mix of a luxury and sports design. What connects Toyota GT 86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S? Everything. These are basically the same cars under different nameplates, and intended for different markets.
All of them are 2-door sports coupes, but U.S. market is supposed to get another variation, and North America is Scion’s playground. 2017 Scion FR-S sedan could be the first new body addition to the lineup, even beating convertibles to the second place.
2017 Scion FR-S Engine range
Apart from the base boxer 2.0L 4-cylinder engine which is a gift from Subaru, FR-S sedan is supposed to be offered with hybrid powertrain to round up the lineup. These are great news for most people that plan on owning the car, but weren’t ready to jump because of boxer engine’s low torque output of 151 lb-ft (even though the car exhibits respectable 200 ponies).
Apart from internal combustion engine, hybrid powertrain will consist of additional electric motor which, together, are supposed to put up around 250 hp and similar torque output. Needless to say, Front engine, Rear-wheel drive and Sporty performance remain untouched, which is just the thing FR-S nameplate needs.
Design – Inside and Outside look
Just like the coupe, 2017 Scion FR-S sedan is supposed to receive the sleek, sporty look with some different touches around the back. For starters, it will feature some four inches longer wheelbase, but this won’t change its midsection too much. Open-mouth lower air intake and toned down nose with sharp headlamps and foglight inserts will be carried over.
Slightly flared fenders will continue to feature as well, while another set of doors is supposed to prolong the arching roofline. Finally, overhang around the back is supposed to be longer, but general finish will likely remain the same.
Interior shouldn’t be changed too much. Of course, car will boast much more room in second row, but both materials and cabin configuration will remain the same. Of course, mid-cycle refresh might be the thing to change some of this, but we can’t yet speculate upon this. 2017 Scion FR-S sedan is supposed to be a fine sporty option with lots of features, which, on the other hand are supposed to be fully customizable. That’s the way it goes with Scion, after all.
Apart from touch screen display and all connectivity options, expect heated front seats, eight speakers, paddle shifters and air conditioner among other options. As for safety features, they generally include only basic options, but sedans might get additional electronic systems like a rearview camera and lane-departure warnings.
2017 Scion FR-S Price and MPG
Depending on transmission option, expect fuel economy ratings between 25 and 28 mpg combined with base 4-cylinder engine. On the other hand, hybrid models are supposed to offer up to 15 percent better fuel economy which doesn’t seem like much, but bear in mind that their performance is much better too. $25,000 should remain the starting price even for sedans, but hybrid sedans should reach $35,000 or even $40,000.
2017 Scion FR-S sedan is supposed to be a fine substitute for some iconic Japanese cars which don’t exist anymore (Nissan Silvia, Mazda RX-8 and Honda S2000). Moreover, it allows you to fit four persons and serve as commuter, as well as roadster.
