Not too long ago Volvo released the all new XC90 crossover which has been praised by most people as being a refined alternative to all those German crossovers. However, not too many people knew at the time that Volvo was in fact developing a scalable platform which they first thought to use on a sedan but later decided to use it first on the XC90 is order to boost their revenue.
Well, a couple of months after the rumors about the sedan came true, the all new wagon version has been leaked on the internet and the end result is far more impressive than we first thought.
What’s new for 2017?
The upcoming 2017 Volvo V90 will be using the same platform as the S90 sedan and XC90 crossover. Because of this it will have roughly the same length, a very similar wheelbase and it will be just as wide as the other two. However, the wagon will offer a lot more room in the back, more luggage space as well as a new design which seems to be quite impressive for what it is.
The Engine range & Specs
Under the hood of the 2017 Volvo V90, a couple of different engines are going to be installed on the US market. The base version will receive a 2 liter turbocharged and supercharged inline 4 petrol engine good for 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This should be more than enough to allow the rather large wagon to get to 60 MPH in around 6 seconds and get up to a limited top speed of 155 MPH. The option will be represented by the T8 which will boast the same petrol engine as the base model but on top of that, it will also include another two electric motors.
These will bump the output of the system to 400 horsepower and little over 470 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful 4 cylinder car in the World. Both of these engines will be using an 8 speed automatic as standard and both of them will come with all wheel drive.
Europe on the other hand will also get a 2 liter turbocharged engine which will only offer around 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. This will also make use of the same 8 speed automatic as before but it will only be available with front wheel drive.
New Design – Interior & Exterior
In terms of design, the V90 looks awfully similar to the Concept Estate showcased a while ago. However, unlike the concept, the V90 offers four doors and a slightly different front end. There are some similarities though such as the C-shaped rear tail lights as well as the Thor’s hammer LED daytime running lights which really set it apart from the rest of its competitors.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Volvo V90 will likely offer the exact same interior as the sedan which in its turn it is mostly based on that of the XC90 crossover. The car will boast the same portrait-mode touch-screen, a very similar center console with a minimum amount of buttons as well as the same premium materials as the other two. Unlike the XC90 which offers three rows of seats, the V90 will only offer two rows, just like the sedan.
The difference comes in the back where there will be more knee-room than in the S90 as well as a lot more luggage space thanks to the massive trunk.
2017 Volvo V90 Price
The official release date is still unknown but considering that Volvo didn’t even announced the car, we expect it on the market some time in the early 2017. The price will likely start around $45,000 to $50,000 for a base version and it will go up from there.
