2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The future¬†2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be stronger and more powerful than other cars in its class. The key reason is new LT4¬† V8 turbocharged engine. GM is currently lagging behind Ford with their muscle car because they released the car nearly a full year after Ford did. Also, because Ford release a couple of high performance models already, they are managing to steal a lot of Camaro’s customers so in order to get back on track, GM will release a few new models of the car in the next couple of years.

One of these will be the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 which has been rumored ever since 2014. This new model will still be based on the Alpha platform but it will come with a lot of upgrades over the current model which will make it faster around a track and on the road.

We expect the new car to get a new engine, a completely different running gear, a slightly more impressive look and an upgraded interior. All of these are meant to allow the ZL1 to compete with the upcoming GT500 which will likely be released in the same time period with it.

Upgraded Engine & Performance

Under the hood of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 the most likely powertrain to be installed is the one found in the current Corvette. This means it will not be a 3.6 liter twin-turbo V6 or even a slightly more impressive twin-turbo V8. Instead, GM will go with a good-old supercharged V8. This means the Camaro will get the all-aluminum 6.2 liter V8 from the Corvette which will likely get a more different supercharger in order to offer slightly more torque and less power. This could mean the car will offer around 630 horsepower and over 670 lb-ft of torque which is very impressive.

The engine will then be mated to either a 6 speed manual gearbox designed specifically for it or to an 8 speed automatic. The 0 to 60 MPH time should be identical for the two with an estimate of around 3.4 seconds while the top speed will likely be higher for the manual. While it will not be the fastest car on the market, the supercharged engine should offer great thrills to its driver and passenger.

Also, because the car will get such a large bump in power, instead of the old running gear the new ZL1 will get adjustable shocks in the front and at the back, much bigger brakes and lightweight wheels. A racing package could also add carbon ceramic disc brakes and carbon fiber wheels but this could cost too much to make any sense.

Redesign – Inside and Outside look

The exterior of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be similar to that of the current model. However, the car will receive new bumpers in the front and at the back, a discrete spoiler and new LED headlights and tail lights. It may also be offered with all new colors, unique to the ZL1 trim level. Some rumors also suggested that the car will get an additional aerodynamic package which will add carbon fiber bits such as a front splitter and a larger rear diffuser.

The interior will be a bit less impressive because the car will be mostly identical to the usual Camaro. The only changes here are going to be the seats, which will likely be provided by Recaro, and the steering wheel which should be more similar to that of the Corvette. The equipment level will also be a bit more different because the ZL1 will be performance rather than comfort-oriented.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Price & Release date

The new Camaro will be launched some time in the early 2017 and it should be ready for sale shortly after. The price will unfortunately not be the same as before because it will offer a lot more. This means that instead of the old $55,000 tag we could now get a ZL1 that costs more than $70,000 which is a rather large bump.

Competitors: Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Shelby GT.
