The new 2018 Honda CRZ is the best choice for all sports car enthusiasts. The CRZ is an iconic name for Honda and even though the car was not always the most powerful or the most fun to drive in its class, it always managed to get a lot of people involved with it because it was cheap and quite nice for the price. The ongoing model is a hybrid car which doesn’t have much in common with the older models and it was somewhat disappointing for the current generation.
Well, if you were one of those people who thought that the car was simply not good enough then you will be pleased to know that Honda actually announced that they will make an all new CRZ.
While there aren’t many details available about the 2018 Honda CRZ, there are a lot of rumors and some of them may just be true. For starters it seems that unlike the ongoing car which is a standalone model, the new CRZ will be part of the Civic lineup. This could mean that the Civic Type R will be released alongside the CRZ and both of them should feature similar powertrains but the CRZ will be the hardcore version of the two.
Design – Inside and Outside look
The design is still an unknown factor of the 2018 Honda CRZ but it seems that Honda will likely borrow a lot from the Civic Coupe concept car so we may see a similar front end on the CRZ as well. The difference will come in the shape of the body which means that the CRZ will follow closely the current model as well as the first and second generations of the car with a stubby short back and a shorter wheelbase than usual.
Its cabin will likely be able to house up to four passengers but it will likely be a two passengers car, especially since the rear seats will be cramped and quite small when comparing them with the seats of a true two-door hatchback. The dashboard as well as the front seats will likely be shared with those of the Civic Type R but the back bench seat will be replaced with two smaller bucket seats. The car will feature a rear glass hatch, as did the first generation of the car, and it may even come with a glass roof on certain versions.
The Engine range & Performance
Engine wise, the 2018 Honda CRZ will luckily not use the 1.5 liter hybrid powertrain of the current model or any derivations of it. It will actually get the same engine as the one found on the current European Type R, a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 offering over 280 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This finally makes the CRZ the hot-hatchback it was meant to be. Just like the current Type R, the CRZ will likely only come with a 6 speed manual gearbox which will send all the power to the front wheels via a limited slip differential.
Acceleration & MPG
This is not the best setup out there but it should allow the relatively light hatchback to drive quite nicely and the front wheel drive setup means that it will not have to deal with the added weight of the all wheel drive system. The car is expected to get to 60 MPH in less than 5 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of over 165 MPH which would easily make it the fastest hatchback in its class.
2018 Honda CRZ Release date and Price
The car is expected to debut at the Detroit Auto Show in 2017 and it will hit the market at the end of that year. The price will likely hover around $36,000 which is right in line with the Type R and most of the other hot-hatchbacks out there. On the other hand, it’s so early to say the exact price…but this estimated, $36,000 is very presumably.
Competitors: Hyundai Veloster, Honda Civic Type R and Toyota Prius.
